About Osteopathy

  • An osteopath is a fully qualified healthcare professional who specializes in the diagnosis, management, treatment, and prevention of musculoskeletal and related disorders. Osteopaths take a holistic (whole-body) approach, focusing on how your skeleton, joints, muscles, nerves, circulation, and connective tissue function together as one system.

  • We get this question all the time. While there is overlap, the key difference is in the philosophy and approach.

    • Osteopaths emphasise the relationship between structure and function. We use a wide range of hands-on techniques (manual therapy) on muscles, joints, and fascia, and consider the body's systems as an integrated whole. We are primary healthcare practitioners.

    • Chiropractors traditionally focus more on the diagnosis and manipulative treatment of disorders of the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine.

    • Physiotherapists often focus on rehabilitating movement and function through exercise and movement following injury, illness, or disability. All are regulated professions.

  • Osteopaths commonly treat:

    • Back pain, neck pain and sciatica

    • Headaches and migraines

    • Joint pain (shoulders, hips, knees, ankles)

    • Arthritis

    • Sports injuries and muscle strains

    • Repetitive strain injuries (RSI)

    • Postural problems

    • Pregnancy-related aches and pains

And much more. If you're unsure if we can help, please just ask!

  • This is a common misconception. Osteopaths treat a wide variety of conditions throughout the body, including muscle and joint sprains, headaches among many other things!

  • Yes, we sure are!

Osteopaths go through 4.5 years of university, including a Bachelors of Science and a Masters of Osteopathy. We write a group journal article, which in fact, Niraj and his colleagues got published!

  • No, osteopaths cannot write prescriptions.

  • Yes, absolutely. Osteopathic treatment is very safe and can be highly beneficial during pregnancy. It can help alleviate common issues like back pain, pelvic girdle pain, sciatica, and rib discomfort. We use very gentle techniques and will position you comfortably, often using supportive pillows and side-lying techniques.

  • Children - Yes

    Babies - No

While there are some osteopaths who treat babies, it requires further study which I have not undertaken.

Children, on the other hand, can benefit greatly from osteopathic treatment and tend to recover very well from injuries.

  • Osteopaths are skilled in a wide range of hands-on techniques, including:

    • Soft tissue massage: to release tense muscles and improve circulation.

    • Articulation: gently moving your joints through their natural range of motion.

    • Muscle Energy Techniques (METs): where you use your muscles against a controlled counter-force.

    • Functional techniques: gentle, rhythmic movements.

    • High-Velocity Low-Amplitude (HVLA) thrusts: a short, quick thrust to a joint to improve mobility (often associated with a "click" or "pop").

    • Visceral techniques: very gentle techniques to encourage normal mobility of internal organs.

    • Dry Needling: (if trained and qualified).

We will always explain what technique they are using and why.

  • It's common to feel a little stiff or achy for a day or two after treatment, similar to how you might feel after a good workout. This is a normal reaction as your body adjusts. You should also feel an improvement in your symptoms and mobility. Drinking plenty of water and applying a heat pack can help ease any post-treatment soreness.

If you don’t feel good, don’t hesitate to contact us and we can discuss the next steps.

  • We do not accept walk-ins. Please book to get your desired date and time.

  • No, you do not need a referral to see an osteopath.

If a referral for a Chronic Disease Management Plan is provided by your local GP, it needs to have Niraj as the provider in order for the rebates to go through.

  • Fees vary depending on whether you’ve been here before or the duration of the consult. Visit our Fees page for a full breakdown.

We will NEVER ask you to pay for multiple sessions at once or for a ‘package’.

  • Yes. People with ‘extras’ cover on their private health may be able to claim a part of their consult fees. This will be claimed when payment is made.

  • You can pay by EFTPOS, credit card, or cash. Payment is due at the time of consultation.

  • Unfortunately, osteopathy is not covered by Medicare.

If you obtain a referral for a Chronic Disease Management Plan from your GP, a rebate can be claimed, with a ‘gap’ payment made by you.

People with Private Health extras can generally claim for osteopathy. If you are unsure, please contact your private health insurer.

  • For consults that have rebates through Medicare or Private Health, a ‘gap’ payment is required.

Medicare and Private Health Insurers don’t cover the full cost of an osteopathic consult, therefore a small ‘gap’ payment is required to make up the rest.

  • The initial consult is 60 minutes.

    It will involve:

    • A detailed case history: We will discuss your current problem, your general health, medical history, and lifestyle.

    • A physical examination: You will be asked to perform simple movements so we can assess your posture, mobility, and function. We will also use our hands to palpate (feel) your tissues and joints.

    • Diagnosis and explanation: We will explain what we believe is causing your problem and discuss a proposed treatment plan.

    • Treatment: We will usually begin treatment in the first session. This will involve safe, appropriate, and gentle manual techniques.

  • The number of treatments you require depends completely on your presenting complaint and the complexity of it. While some people feel better after 1 or 2 treatments, others may require more.

This will always be discussed in your initial consult with full transparency.

  • Yes. If you have any reports from xrays, ultrasounds, CT scans or MRI scans, bring them with you.

We will be able to access some reports online, but not all.

  • Osteopathy uses ‘hands on’ techniques to help diagnose and treat clients. You will likely be asked to remove relevant clothing (tops and/or trousers) to assist in this.

Alternatively, wearing loose clothing may be helpful as well as shorts or T-shirts.

If you feel uncomfortable, a gown can be provided or we can work out an alternative together.

  • DVA and TAC clients - Yes

    WorkCover - No

We treat clients under the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) and Transport Accident Commission (TAC) schemes. Please ensure you have the appropriate referral and claim number from your GP or case manager before your appointment.

Unfortunately, we do not treat clients under the WorkCover scheme.
